Serge oodles of fluffy ruffles

I have been wanting to try to make a fluffy ruffled scarf for awhile. I first saw these in a high end fashion store a short while back in knit and loved them. And what girlie girl doesn't want more fluffy happy ruffles in her life to dress up a plain old T-shirt?

I knew I could make a ruffly scarf but just needed to find time to try it. I love to find trendy fun things and figure out how to make them. I have allergies to wool items so I tend to shy away from anything knit. I thought maybe if I just make this out of a lightweight scarf fabric it would look beautiful. I love the rolled hem setting on my Serger that let's me make sassy ribbons out of the smallest tidbit of fabric and scarves out of the most exquisite silk pieces.



So yesterday at naptime I serged the edges of this fabric with a three thread rolled hem to start. Then, I set the ruffling foot in place and serged oodles and oodles of ruffles to 1/8" wide elastic and like magic I had my very own ruffled scarf that my daughter had to try on immediately. I may never see my fancy fluffy ruffled scarf again but it was fun to make. I just might have to sneak it back out of her room at naptime today or make another.

My little hearts for my little Loves

Sophia showing off her new Valentine's hairbows I sewed for her during nap. I didn't notice she was carrying her toy pink elephant under Nano until I looked at this photo. Oops!



I have been wanting to make some of these "3D" hearts for awhile and thought it would be fun to make some Valentine's hairbows.

Oh and I know these aren't "bows" but "hairbows" in our house refers to anything including just plain old rubber bands that has to do with hair barrettes or hair ponytail holders.







She was really excited about some heart-shaped hairbows to wear for Valentine's Day.




I am making some for Kaylee too even though she doesn't have much hair yet.

A bouquet of hairbow flowers

Okay, so making fabric flower hairbows is super-addictive and I admit it I am a flower-aholic. They are quick to make on my serger. Since my husband doesn't really believe in getting me flowers much anymore, I have to grow them or make them. I have killed more flowers over the years than I care to mention but maybe these fancy blue and black fabric ones will spread some happiness in our dreary snow filled winter.





My daughter was filled with happiness and super excited about her very own bouquet of hairbow flowers. I am sure it will be destroyed in a second but it was fun to dream that she would store them in a little vase like flowers.

Snuzzles 5-in-1 multipurpose baby garment

The baby Snuzzle is a multipurpose baby garment created to be a burp cloth, baby bib, baby bottle holder blanket, towel, and an emergency blanket. It is lined with a heavy weave absorbent cloth material. All are unique and individually made by me. Patent pending.



Snuzzles can be used as a baby bib. Just tie the ties around the baby. Then tie the bottom tie and fold the fabric up to make a crumb catcher.




It can be used as a baby bottle holder that works really well in a carseat when you are on the go. Just tie the ties around any size or style baby bottle and tip the bottle into the baby's mouth. If you are lucky, your baby may even grip the Snuzzle and "hold it in place" like mine did.



Available in prints with Choo choo trains, monkeys playing soccer for boys.

Teddy bears and baby animals in gender neutral colors for the parents that want to be surprised.


It can be used as an emergency cloth diapers shown on the doll above.


Prints with cupcakes and princess crowns are available for girls.

Blue Flower Hairbow for dance

I made this little Carnation shaped hairbow to match Sophia's light blue dance leotard and tutu today during nap. I serged the fabric edges with a three thread rolled hem and then gathered the middle opened one side which formed a Carnation shaped flower.  However in the photo it looks much more flat than it does in person. The petals are curved up so it appears to lose something online.  My husband loved it so much on Sophia that he took a picture of her with it on in her dance leotard and coat.  I added some buttons to look like the center and added the hair elastic to the underside to attach to her hair ponytail or ballerina bun

Ruffled Valentine Door Decoration

I serged this Ruffled Heart Door Decoration on my serger today while the kids took their very short, less than an hour naps this afternoon. I had this third of a yard of scrap of red satin that I found in the remnant bin awhile back that I had no particular plan for so I thought why not make a heart. I wanted to make a Valentine door decoration last year but never got around to it. Today, I was determined to make a Valentine's decoration so that it could be enjoyed for a few weeks. I snuck downstairs into my sewing room office and serged oodles of ruffles with the ruffle foot of my serger. It is so much easier to make oodles of ruffles on a serger with the ruffle foot than a sewing machine and all in one step, like magic. A ruffling foot makes it so quick and fun. I am so glad to have my ruffling foot that my mom gave me for my serger. Thanks Mom! You are the best!

Note: I started with 15 inches of fabric cut into 3 long strips 4 inches wide and serged them together into one super long strip. The ruffled satin heart is made with a 3 thread rolled hem and the ruffling foot. I attached the fabric to an old clothes hanger that I bent into a heart shape.

Plum Pudding's new Ballgown

Sophia was upset that Plum Pudding had nothing to wear to the Fancy Ball so mommy came to the rescue and serged a quick Ballgown for Plum Pudding out of strips of scrap satin fabric this morning. Whew! That was a close one.

Note: I used rolled hem and gathering foot for gathers on serger.

A blue hibiscus flower hair bow

I made a blue hibiscus flower hairbow too at Sophia's request. The original was just my "mock up" to see if I could make it but I thought it turned out okay so I made one for each girl knowing that we don't have many black hairbows around here.



Now, we have royal blue satin which I will probably name, "The Sophia."

Serger Hibiscus hair flowers

I serged a couple Hibiscus hair flowers for my girls while they were napping today in case they ever make it to Hawaii. Keep dreaming because it isn't happening in their near future. The Hibiscus flowers are detachable from the headband so we can change them around. Above is Sophia's and Kaylee has one too shown below.




Sophia says she wants one in blue now. Guess it I have to make Hibiscus hair flowers in blue.
Notes to make these again.  Cut out oval shape and serge edges of shiny fabric with a rolled hem (3 thread).  Sew gathering middles and attach to hair barrette or elastic

What's a "door snake?"

The cozy little pair of door snakes



They have door hangers to hang them on the knob when they are not under the door blocking drafts.



Anyone who sews knows it is hard to come up with sewing items that a guy would like so here is something that I made for my brother. He asked yesterday where he could buy a door snake. Well, I am not sure where you can buy one ready made, but I was very sure I could make what he needed and what I call an under door draft stopper.




Mike was the inspiration for tonight's little project.



I made these whimsical little "door snakes" to block out the drafts in his home.



I hope he likes these little guys and they keep the cold out of the house.
